Job Title: Laboratory Technician – Microbiology (Food & Dietary Supplements)
Job Description
This role offers the opportunity to work in a growing local laboratory that is part of an international biotechnology organization. The Laboratory Technician supports microbiology testing for food and dietary supplements, performs sample accessioning, and prepares samples for basic USP testing while consistently applying GMP and GLP standards. The position is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, comfortable working with laboratory information systems, and eager to grow with a small, expanding team.
Responsibilities
- Apply Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) in all assigned activities, as appropriate.
- Learn and perform sample accession tasks, including opening, registering, tracking, labeling, sending, and disposing of samples according to established procedures.
- Support microbiology testing of food and dietary supplement samples under appropriate guidance and training.
- Coordinate with client services, with guidance, to establish or update customer service procedures and workflows.
- Communicate discrepancies or unusual findings to appropriate personnel and assist with problem solving and resolution.
- Handle internal customer inquiries, investigate issues with assistance, and follow up to ensure questions are resolved.
- Contact internal clients for clarification when sample information, requests, or documentation are incomplete or unclear.
- Use proprietary Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) software comfortably in daily work to manage samples, tests, and documentation.
- Weigh and prepare samples for basic United States Pharmacopeia (USP) testing, following laboratory protocols and safety procedures.
- Maintain accurate, organized, and timely records of all laboratory activities and ensure documentation meets internal quality standards.
- Follow laboratory safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and support a clean, compliant work area.
Essential Skills
- Experience or education in a laboratory environment, particularly in microbiology or related scientific disciplines.
- Ability to apply GMP and GLP principles in daily laboratory tasks.
- Comfort using proprietary Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) software for sample tracking and documentation.
- Proficiency in weighing and preparing samples for basic USP testing.
- Strong attention to detail for accurate sample accessioning, labeling, and recordkeeping.
- Effective communication skills to report discrepancies, coordinate with client services, and interact with internal clients.
- Ability to handle allergens comfortably and safely in a laboratory setting.
- Computer literacy, including the ability to learn and use laboratory software and standard office applications.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Associate degree in a relevant science discipline is preferred; relevant laboratory experience may be considered in place of formal education.
- Experience or coursework in microbiology, laboratory science, or related fields.
- Prior experience in a GMP/GLP-regulated environment is beneficial.
- Familiarity with food and dietary supplement testing is an advantage.
- Interest in contributing to and growing with a small, expanding laboratory team.
Work Environment
The role is based in a laboratory located in West Valley City. Standard hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday work for a few hours as needed. The laboratory is a new local facility that is part of an international biotechnology company, offering the feel of a small team with the backing of a larger organization. The current team consists of approximately three people and is expected to grow to about eight to twelve team members, providing opportunities for collaboration and professional development. The work involves handling food, dietary supplements, and potential allergens in a controlled laboratory environment. Team members wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established safety procedures while working with laboratory instruments, computers, and proprietary LIMS software.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Salt Lake City, UT.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
