Gym Staff - Salt Lake City/SOMA
Job Description
Job DescriptionGym Staff / Adult Programming Instructor (Hybrid) - Salt Lake City & South Main GymsReady to Split Your Time Between the Front Desk and the Floor?
If you love climbing, thrive on great conversations with strangers-turned-friends, and can't sit still for a whole shift behind a desk, this one's for you. We're looking for someone who wants the best of both worlds: running the show at the front desk and getting hands-on time coaching adult climbers.
About The Front
The Front Climbing Club exists to create spaces where people fall in love with climbing and with each other's company. We build gyms that feel like a third home - places where members show up for the movement and stay for the community. Our team is the heartbeat of that experience, and we're always looking for people who bring energy, care, and a genuine passion for the sport to everything they do.
About the Role
This is a hybrid position split across two teams: Gym Operations and Adult Programming. You'll spend part of your week running front desk operations, checking in members, and keeping the gym floor safe and welcoming - and the other part coaching adult climbers, building their skills, and helping them fall in love with the sport. You'll report to both the Gym Manager and the Adult Programming Manager, working across our Salt Lake City and South Main locations. This is a full-time role, and pay reflects both sides of the job: $17–$19/hour for gym staff duties and $16–$22/hour for instructional work.
What You'll Do
On the front desk / floor side:
- Welcome members and guests, run them through waivers, and show off what makes our gyms great
- Handle membership sign-ups, updates, and paperwork
- Answer calls, quote pricing, and hype up upcoming events and merch
- Ring up sales, process returns, and help out at competitions and markets
- Keep things clean - daily upkeep, deep cleans, the works
- Walk the facility, flag issues on a tablet, and keep management in the loop
- Watch the climbing floor for safe belay technique, proper tags, and rule-following
- Run belay tests, autobelay orientations, and step in when you spot unsafe behavior
On the instruction side:
- Lead adult programming classes for climbers of all levels
- Help new hires learn the ropes (pun intended) as part of our training system
- Design and adapt instruction so every student improves and has fun doing it
- Greet your students by name and bring the energy every session
- Call out unsafe habits on the spot, professionally and without hesitation
- Pitch in on facility upkeep when needed
What You Bring
You might be a great fit if:
- You've got 5+ years of experience across work, school, or trade training - and at least 1–2 years of that is climbing instruction or coaching
- You genuinely love climbing and want to share that passion with others
- You're a natural communicator who can motivate a room and read what a member or student needs in the moment
- You're just as comfortable running a register as you are coaching a technique
- You're flexible with your schedule - nights, weekends, and everything in between
- You've got (or are ready to get) First Aid/CPR and CWI certification (Utah Alcohol Cert also required for the gym staff side - we'll help you get it)
- You can lift up to 50 lbs, move around the gym floor for extended stretches, and demonstrate climbing technique yourself
- You're detail-oriented, self-motivated, and don't need someone hovering over you during downtime
- You're comfortable in MS Office (Excel, Outlook) for the day-to-day admin side of things
Perks & Benefits
- PTO
- Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance
- Short-term and Long-term Disability
- Accident coverage
- 401K retirement plan
- Free gym membership
- Discounts on food and merchandise
- Real growth opportunities across departments as The Front expands
