Job Description

Job DescriptionDesign Engineer - 3D Modeling

Design Engineer - 3D Modeling

Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Design Engineer specializing in 3D modeling to develop robust mechanical designs for packaging and automation machinery. In this role you will create detailed SolidWorks models and manufacturing-ready drawings for conveyors, PLC-controlled systems, packaging equipment, and industrial automation machinery. You will collaborate with electrical, controls, and manufacturing teams to integrate sensors, actuators and PLC interfaces, ensure producibility, and support prototyping and commissioning activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed 3D models and assemblies in SolidWorks for packaging equipment, conveyors, automation machinery, and industrial equipment.
  • Produce manufacturing-ready 2D drawings, weldment and sheet metal flat patterns, tolerance callouts and BOMs to support fabrication and assembly.
  • Design machined components, welded assemblies, and sheet metal parts with attention to manufacturability and cost-effective fabrication methods.
  • Collaborate with controls and electrical engineers to integrate sensors, PLCs, actuators and other electro-mechanical components into mechanical designs.
  • Support product data management (PDM) processes: maintain accurate CAD files, revision control, release documentation and part numbering.
  • Work with manufacturing and suppliers to resolve production issues, problem-solve design-for-manufacture opportunities, and support first-article inspections.
  • Create and maintain design documentation, assembly instructions, and commissioning checklists; provide technical support during assembly and on-site startup.
  • Perform design validation activities including tolerance stack-ups, interference checks, basic FEA/strength assessments (or coordinate with analysis resources) and test planning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of mechanical design experience with a focus on industrial equipment, packaging machinery, conveyors or automation systems.
  • Proven proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modeling, assemblies, sheet metal design and drawing generation.
  • Hands-on experience designing machined components, welded assemblies and producing manufacturing-ready documentation.
  • Working knowledge of PLC-controlled systems, sensors, actuators and electro-mechanical integration; ability to collaborate with controls engineers.
  • Experience with Product Data Management (PDM)/PLM systems and change control processes.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding and assembly techniques.
  • Familiarity with packaging equipment design, automation machinery, robotics or material handling systems is highly desirable.
