Position Summary
Hydro Hog is seeking a motivated and experienced Excavation Lead Driver to join our growing team. This position is responsible for operating commercial vehicles and excavation equipment while leading field crews on excavation and hydro excavation projects. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, organized, and able to communicate effectively with customers, utility companies, municipalities, and team members.
This position requires someone who can work independently, lead by example, and ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Safely operate commercial vehicles and excavation equipment.
- Lead and supervise field crews on daily excavation projects.
- Perform hydro excavation and utility locating support as assigned.
- Transport equipment, materials, and water safely to and from job sites.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and complete required DOT documentation.
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with OSHA, DOT, company safety policies, and applicable regulations.
- Read utility locates, site plans, and work orders.
- Coordinate with customers, contractors, municipalities, and utility companies.
- Maintain accurate daily job reports and equipment inspections.
- Ensure equipment is properly maintained and report maintenance concerns promptly.
- Assist with excavation, cleanup, and other field duties as needed.
- Promote a safe, productive, and professional work environment.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Class B CDL.
- Tanker Endorsement (Required).
- Clean driving record and ability to meet company driving standards.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and any other legally required screenings.
- Ability to safely lift up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Willingness to work overtime, nights, or occasional weekends as project demands require.
- Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous hydro excavation experience.
- Excavation or underground utility construction experience.
- Experience operating vacuum trucks, water trucks, mini excavators, skid steers, backhoes, or similar heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of Blue Stakes/811 utility locating procedures.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
- Current First Aid/CPR Certification.
- Flagger Certification.
- Experience reading construction plans and utility maps.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for routine equipment inspections and maintenance.
- Familiarity with DOT regulations, electronic driver logs (ELDs), and vehicle inspection requirements.
